Glam Slam: Athletes hit the New York Fashion Week Circuit

The month of September marks a major overlap in fashion and sports, as Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week and the US Open happen simultaneously. Athletes are seated in show front rows and fashion industry players check out the on-court action. Even Vogue magazine editor-in-chief, Anna Wintour, split her time between Roger Federer’s box and the Spring/Summer ’15 fashion presentations. This season brought out athletes across sports, including Fashion Week rookies and style veterans. Below A Glam Slam recaps the sports pros who hit the New York Fashion Week circuit:

WNBA star, Skylar Diggins, was a front row fixture at the Richard Chai LOVE & Men’s show as well as Argyleculture By Russell Simmons. She shared the fashion snaps below:

Fresh off of her US Open win, Serena Williams held her first Fashion Week presentation. As part of Style 360, she showcased the Serena Williams Signature Statement Collection from HSN. The fashions on display were designed with sporty influences and bold leopard and camouflage prints, all in line with Williams’ personal style preferences. The tennis champ’s HSN collection is available here.

Williams’ debut show drew a large crowd, including high-profile guests like Wintour. Also in attendance was US Open runner-up, Caroline Wozniacki, who joined Wintour in the front row.

Wozniacki and Wintour were also seatmates at the Michael Kors show, after the tennis star visited the designer backstage.

Grungy Gentleman’s debut runway show, including a collaborative collection with Mitchell & Ness, attracted a range of New York athletes. Among them were Knicks teammates Tim Hardaway Jr, Shane Larkin, Cleanthony Early, and J.R. Smith.

Smith continued to make the Fashion Week rounds, hitting up the En Noir, Tim Coppens, Hood by Air, and Public School shows.

For New York Liberty’s Cappie Pondexter, her many Fashion Week activities included a viewing of the 5:31 Jerome – Presentation, Harlem’s Fashion Row 7th Annual Fashion Show And Style Awards, and a front row seat to Serena Williams’ HSN show.

Public School’s sports-centric front row also included NBA baller Dahntay Jones.

The Public School show was also on Russell Westbrook’s packed Fashion Week agenda, which included visits to En Noir, Fashion Rocks, 3.1 Phillip Lim, Nolcha. For an inside look at Westbrook’s experience and images, check out his New York Fashion Week diary for Vogue.

Westbrook was joined by Olympic Gold Medalist, Nastia Liukin, at “Project Subway.” The two athletes served as judges for the show, which included veggie-inspired runway designs from vegetables found at Subway restaurants.

Chris Bosh viewed the latest Spring/Summer ’15 collections from Billy Reid and Mark McNairy before taking over the Fashion Week spotlight himself. Together with Hennessy V.S., Bosh feted the launch of his new neckwear collection, Mr. Nice Tie. The line is a collaboration with Armstrong & Wilson and the event was held at Carson Street Clothiers.

Nick Young supported Bosh and his new endeavor before making Fashion Week stops to Tim Coppens and the Hood by Air show with J.R. Smith.

There he was joined by New York Rangers goalie and style icon, Henrik Lundqvist.
