California State Games 2012 (Skateboarding)

The Competition Heats Up

The California State Games, a Junior Olympics event, was again held at the Encinitas Y but this year was exceptional, with girls really stepping up the intensity. The 11′ left-handed kidney was the tool for a serious display of Girls’ Bowl progression. The girls came from all over California to throw down lines and see who would get the gold. The youngest was Minna Stesse of Petaluma, at only 6 years old.

The shallow is 7′ and they ripped the coping up like butter. All of the girls looked very comfortable with speed and shredded the entire bowl. Lily Graves, from Moorpark, and Bryce Wettstein a regular at Encinitas Y are both coming up the ranks quickly with their smooth, fast styles.

Arianna Carmona

Front, back and Indy airs are second nature to these top competitors. They did these with differing styles and those were just their opening tricks. Sarah Thompson, sponsored Silly Girl Skateboards had the announcer’s attention. Ultimately the gold would go to Arianna Carmona, of Buena Park. She showed her hand with a poker face. Her flawless execution pushed her into the lead to take the gold.

In addition to the Girls Bowl, most of the girls competed against the boys in Mini-Ramp and Vert. Arianna took Gold in the Over 11 Unsponsored – Vert as well. I was only able to make it down Sunday so I do not know if any competed in street but it is very likely.
