NCAA Women’s Tournament Bracket: Brigham Young Cougars preview

Sometimes you have to find your footing at the right time.

Who? The Cougars of Brigham Young University.

When do they play in the first round? They play Louisville on Saturday, March 21 at 4 p.m. ET.

What? It started with a pair of fifty-cent cougar cubs in 1924, then became Cosmo, short for cosmopolitan, and yes, I do find it amusing that a Mormon school’s mascot shares its name with a cocktail.

Where? Provo, Utah, adjacent to Orem.

Why? They won the West Coast conference tournament.

How? Lexi Eaton had 22 points to lead BYU over San Francisco 76-65. Morgan Bailey added 20 points and eight rebounds for a Cougar team that hit 11 threes and shot over 50% from the field.

Surprise? Predicted to finish second in the conference, they finished fifth, four games behind Gonzaga.

RPI: 57

SOS: 103

Record: 23-9 (12-6 West Coast)

Good wins: Butler in Hawai’i.

Bad losses: Cal State Northridge.

Who’s running this show? Jeff Judkins, since 2001. He was a Celtics draft pick.

Extra, Extra! The Daily Herald. Might get something from the Salt Lake Tribune, too.

BYU, this PDF thing is not on.

Junior guard Lexi Eaton fills the scoring column for the Cougars at 20.7 points a night. I’m not sure what I find more interesting about her, the 40% on threes, or the 209 free throws attempted. Senior forward Morgan Bailey can be relied on for a double-double day in and day out, at 17.2 points and 10.6 rebounds. Together they make up more than half of BYU’s scoring.
