NCAA Women’s Tournament Bracket: Ohio Bobcats preview

The Bobcats look to make some noise in the Big Dance.

Who? The Bobcats of Ohio.

When do they play in the first round? Ohio plays Arizona State on Saturday, March 21 at 6:30 p.m. ET.

What? A sly, wily, scrappy animal. Rufus‘s name is both scientifically accurate and historically significant.

Where? Athens, Ohio, which doesn’t get flooded so much by the Hocking River anymore.

Why? They won the Mid-American conference tournament.

How? Cha Sweeney poured in 24 points for the Eagles, but it wasn’t enough to keep Eastern Michigan’s Cinderella run alive. Kiyanna Black scored 25 for Ohio in their 60-44 win.

Surprise? Predicted to finish fourth in the conference’s East division, they won the East and were the MAC’s top team overall, four games ahead of Akron in the East and three games ahead of West winner Ball State.

RPI: 59

SOS: 236

Record: 27-4 (16-2 MAC)

Good wins: La Salle and UMass in Atlanta.

Bad losses: At Western Michigan might be the worst, but I don’t know if there’s anything on here they shouldn’t have lost that they did.

Who’s driving this thing? Bob Boldon, since 2013. He helped orchestrate the phenomenal turnaround at Youngstown State.

Extra, Extra! The Athens Messenger.

Junior guard Kiyanna Black leads the way for the Bobcats, at 15.8 points per game. Sophomore Quiera Lampkins adds 12.7 and a team-high 6.7 rebounds. Junior forward Lexie Baldwin and senior guard Mariah Harris have stepped their game up in the MAC tournament.
