NCAA Women’s Tournament Bracket: South Dakota State Jackrabbits preview

The Jackrabbits surmount the Summit and claim bragging rights as the best team in South Dakota.

Who? The Jackrabbits of South Dakota State. It is highly recommended that you not mix this SDSU up with the one represented by the Aztecs. Neither side takes kindly to that kind of mistake.

When do they play in the first round? They play Oregon State on Friday, March 20 at 5 p.m. ET.

What? Represented by Jack the Rabbit. Somehow that name got the plurality of the vote. Forgive me, South Dakotans, but I am not impressed with your imagination.

Where? Brookings, South Dakota, site of the South Dakota State Art Museum.

Why? They won the Summit League tournament.

How? Macy Miller had 19 points, Ellie Thompson 18, and the Jackrabbits built an ultimately insurmountable 18-point halftime lead en route to a 72-57 win over in-state rivals South Dakota.

Surprise? Predicted to finish first in the conference, they ended up in second, one game behind South Dakota.

RPI: 55

SOS: 165

Record: 24-8 (12-4 Summit)

Good wins: At Arkansas.

Bad losses: At Denver.

Who’s running this show? Aaron Johnston, since 2000.

Extra, Extra! The Brookings Register.

The geek heart in me glories in SDSU’s collection of statistics, dating back to the 1975-76 season.

The current statistics, however, are more relevant to the topic at hand. Senior guard/forward Megan Waytashek leads the Jackrabbits’ charge, with 14.3 points per game, including 40% three-point shooting. Freshman guard Macy Miller has provided 13.5 points per game. Senior forward Mariah Clarin leads them in rebounding with 6.8, chipping in 11.7 points.
