NCAA Women’s Tournament Bracket: UConn Huskies preview

Water is wet, the Sky wear blue, and UConn has an auto-bid.

Who? The Huskies of Connecticut. Seriously, stop calling them the Lady Huskies; that’s not how UConn rolls.

When do they play in the first round? UConn plays St. Francis of Brooklyn on Saturday, March 21 at 9 p.m. ET.

What? Jonathan has recently been revamped, and now looks a bit like a Lego decal of a Husky.

Where? Storrs, Connecticut. Did you know Connecticut is known as the Bay State?

Why? They won the American Athletic conference tournament.

How? Though South Florida was pesky, they never truly threatened UConn in the Huskies’ 84-70 win. Breanna Stewart (22 points, 12 rebounds) and Morgan Tuck (17 points and 10 rebounds) each notched double-doubles, but Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis took game-high honors at 23 points.

Surprise? Did the sun rise in the east this morning?

RPI: 5

SOS: 40

Record: 32-1 (20-0 American)

Good wins: At Notre Dame.

Bad losses: I had to think really hard about this one, but I think it might be that loss to Stanford.

Who’s running this show? Geno Auriemma, since 1985. There is little I can say about the man that he hasn’t said about himself.

Extra, Extra! The Hartford Courant, The New Haven Register, The New London Day… in The Same River Twice John Walters described Connecticut as a state of many small, well-read towns- and there are very few other sports to write about in the Nutmeg State, especially in winter. There’s a reason they’re called the Herde.

The numbers for UConn are mind-boggling, mind-scrabbling, and possibly mind-Yahtzeeing. The offense is potent- 90 points per game. The defense is stifling- 47 points allowed. All five starters average in double figures, led by the myth, the legend, the junior forward Breanna Stewart (17.3 points, 7.1 rebounds). And when it’s not her, it’s senior Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis, the three-point sharpshooter who hits more than half her threes. Super-speedy junior point guard Moriah Jefferson dishes about five assists per game and nabs 2.7 steals.

My favorite Husky (yes, I do have one) is sophomore forward Morgan Tuck, who seems to do a little bit of everything.

Seriously mind-boggling stat: Breanna Stewart and Kiah Stokes have each outblocked the Huskies’ opposition. At 132, Stokes has more than twice as many than the 62 of UConn’s opponents.

Very rarely does a team leave me at a loss for words the way UConn’s dismantling of their would-be rivals does.
