Women's Softball World Championship

The 12th Women's Softball World Championship began on Wednesday in Caracas with the participation of 16 countries and regions, sport sources said.

International Softball Federation (ISF)'s president Don Porter thanked the Venezuelan hospitality during the Technical Council, hosted in Caracas.

"I have heard the opinion of the players from many countries and they are satisfied: The security, the food, the transportation, the attention have been excellent," Porter said.

The Venezuelan government invested 128 million bolivares (some 30 million U.S. dollars) to build and improve the stadiums and training fields.

The competitors were divided in two groups, the Group A was formed by the United States, China, Canada, Venezuela, Italy, Dominican Republic and Botswana.

The Group B was formed by Japan, Australia, Holland, Chinese Taipei, Cuba, Argentina, New Zealand and Great Britain.

The championship is expected to finish on July 2.
