In our Game of the Week, we spotlighted two of the Atlantic Sun’s best — and it was truly a classic. FGCU comes back from 15 down to win by two.
In a game with two of the best in the Atlantic Sun conference — and teams who always play contested battles against one another. FGCU was able to overcome a 15-point deficit to come back and win by two, 57-55.
“We knew it was going to be a dogfight and we were right it was a dogfight,” said Stetson coach Lynn Bria “We don’t fear them, we’ve never feared them.”
In the first half, it was the Hatter’s Amber Porter who dominated the action with 14 first half points. In the second half, FGCU went on a mini-run before Stetson responded with a run of their own. The Hatters led by as many as 15 in the second half, before FGCU’s 6-foot-3 guard Whitney Knight put an end to that with three second half threes.
“Whitney’s defense on Porter was fantastic,” said FGCU coach Karl Smesko.
But it was 5-foot-7 senior and captain Jenna Cobb who made the biggest plays of the game. She nailed a three to tie the game at 53, then scored on a three-point play to give FGCU the lead for good.
“One thing that coach focuses on is to not worry about whether your making it or missing it,” said Cobb to our contributor Justin Kane. “But more so on you form so even though we didn’t shoot well we needed to just keep shooting.”
Knight finished with a game-high 20 points and 10 rebounds for the Eagles. Amber Porter had 17 points and Myeisha Hall ended with 14 points for the Hatters.
