If you've played on a softball or baseball team, played any sport in college, or just plain bought hats in your lifetime, you probably have one or two to spare. What about that one in your closet that you used to wear all the time but just don't seem to use it anymore? I've got the perfect thing for you to do with it: donate it to a cancer patient.

Hats & Hugs from Sandra's Heart is an initiative by Connie and Maynard Olson to honor the memory of their mother by collecting hats, bandanas, visors and monetary donations to the Sandra Olson Memorial Fund they've set up in her name. Sandra Olson passed away on January 9, 2009, after an 18-month battle with metastatic breast and colorectal cancer.

Why hats?

According to the Hats & Hugs from Sandra's Heart website:

Self-confidence and feeling good about their appearance goes along way in keeping spirits up while fighting this terrible disease. The hats will be provided at no cost to the patients through the local American Cancer Society office, hospitals, cancer centers, oncologist offices and at events where cancer patients are expected to be in attendance.

So take five minutes to go through your closet today and send a box to Sandra's fund at:

The Sandra Olson Memorial Fund

3586 Sangani Blvd. Suite L158

D'Iberville, MS 39540

The Sandra Olson Memorial Fund also accepts cash, check or money order donations, as well as donations via PayPal on their website and at Hancock Bank. For more information, click here.

You can also follow @HatsandHugs on Twitter for other ways to help out the cause.
