EDITOR'S NOTE: AnnGaff and LesleyHiggins are writing these previews for the USA Track & Field Championships, taking place this weekend in Eugene, OR, based on their firsthand Track & Field experience. Gaffigan and Higgins competed against each other in college, with Gaffigan representing the Nebraska Huskers and Higgins representing the Colorado Buffs. Both women competed last year in the 3000m Steeplechase at the Olympic Trials. This year, the two are spectators-from-afar of the USATF Championships/World Team Trials; Higgins is out with a broken foot and Gaffigan gave birth to a baby girl in May.
High Jump: Final on Thursday, June 25 at 5:00pm
Top 10 entry throws:
Chaunte Howard 2.00m
Destinee Hooker 1.98m
Elizabeth Patterson 1.95m
Sharon Day 1.93m
Rebecca Christensen 1.91m
Amy Acuff 1.90m
Dierdre Mullen 1.90m
Adriane Stone 1.90m
Raevan Harris 1.89m
Lauren Collins 1.86m
My picks:
1. Destinee Hooker
2. Chaunte Howard
3. Amy Acuff
Both Destinee Hooker (pictured left), three-time NCAA Champ for the Texas Longhorns, and Chaunte Howard, 2005 World Silver Medalist, have cleared 1.98m (6'6") this season. That's about as high as your average doorway in your house! Look for these two to be the last ones jumping with Hooker being my pick to take it, as she tends to perform very well in high-pressure situations and looked great at the NCAA Champs.
4-time Olympian and 7-time World team member Amy Acuff is my pick for the third spot for the 2009 World team, as she is a veteran who is looking to go out on top in what she has announced will be her final season. Acuff was 4th at the 2004 Olympics.
There is a great article on Hooker's goal to follow in Jesse Owens' footsteps in Berlin HERE.
