How did I miss this news? Last night I happened to mention to Al that I wished we could go to Kapalua in October and watch the awesome LPGA golfers play 11 from the lanai of my in-laws’ vacation home, and Al responded, “oh, didn’t you hear? They canceled it.”

They WHAT?

I guess it shouldn’t be surprising that in an economic downturn, event sponsors are scarce, but it hadn’t occurred to me that women’s golf would go wanting, especially in Hawaii. Kapalua is Morgan Pressel’s home course. Hawaii is Michelle Wie’s home state. It’s convenient to Korea (and have you seen the number of Korean golfers on the LPGA tour lately?). It’s a golfer’s PARADISE, for Pete’s sake. And the Kapalua event gets canceled for a lack of sponsorship? That just seems wrong.

Oh yes ...that was devastating. As you say it was a special and much loved tournament for a number of reasons, and its cancellation may well have been the straw that broke the camel's back... and precipitated the the player meeting and communique that ended in the resignation of Commissioner Carolyn Bivens. Lets hope Kapalua and other lost events can be brought back once the economic outlook improves.
