Beginning this week I’m going to be bringing you coverage of Big Ten Women’s basketball, focusing on a specific team each week. As an introduction to upcoming posts, here is a quick preview of what’s been happening around the conference so far this season:
Illinois
The Fighting Illini women’s basketball team is 11-6. Their most recent big win was a 64-62 victory over Minnesota on January 10. They are 3-4 in the Big Ten so far.
Indiana
Indiana is 10-8 and 3-4 in the conference. The Hoosiers are led in scoring by Jori Davis, Jamie Braun and Hope Elam.
Iowa
The Hawkeyes are 8-10 and 1-6 in the Big Ten. Iowa is coached by Lisa Bluder, who is a two-time Big Ten Coach of the Year and WBCA Regional Coach of the Year.
Michigan
Michigan is 10-7 and 2-5 in the conference. The Wolverines are full of young talent, but led by senior center Krista Phillips and junior guard Veronica Hicks. One more win will already give them a better record than last season when they finished 10-20, and lost 14 of the last 15 games.
Michigan State
The Spartans are 11-7 overall and 2-5 so far in the Big Ten. Michigan State is led by a 6’9” senior, Allyssa DeHaan. She is only 28 more blocks away from tying the current NCAA record for career blocks at 480. Courtney Schiffauer leads the team in scoring with an average of 16.5 points per game.
Minnesota
Minnesota is 11-7 and 4-3 in the Big Ten. The Golden Gophers have two tough upcoming games as they face Michigan State on the 24th and Ohio State on the 28th.
Northwestern
Northwestern is 12-6 and 3-4 in the conference. Their goal from the beginning of the year was to give the program a fresh start, especially in the conference. The Wildcats are led by Amy Jaeschke with 15.3 points per game and 7.3 rebounds per game.
Ohio State
The Buckeyes are 19-1 with an undefeated record of 7-0 in the Big Ten so far. OSU is led by the dynamic duo of Samantha Prahalis and Jantel Lavender. Prahalis has recently scored 20+ points in multiple consecutive games, while Lavender dominates in the paint.
Penn State
Penn State is 13-4 and 5-2 in the Big Ten. 5’11” Senior Tyra Grant leads the team in scoring with almost 20 points per game. Their next conference game will be when they face Wisconsin on Thursday.
Purdue
The Boilermakers are 9-9 so far this season with a 4-3 record in the Big Ten. Head Coach Sharon Versyp recently became the eighth Big Ten coach to have 200 career wins; the 200th came after Purdue’s victory over Northwestern.
Wisconsin
Wisconsin is 15-4 overall and 5-3 in the conference. Alyssa Karel is the only player who averages in double digits, with the rest of the scoring being spread out between 11 different players.
