Derby, derby, derby, derby, derby!

I passed my first safety skills assessment! I'm a Step 2 derby-girl-in-training now.

I'm learning to block! And have the bruises on my shoulders to show for it.

I've played Blood and Thunder with league players! (basically a game of last-woman-standing on the track) I was knocked out of bounds, but I was not knocked down! (And I'm sure to pay for that statement later.)

My father and stepmom called me on the morning of my birthday this past week. He said, "If I made a list of all the people I've ever known who would be playing roller derby, your name would be at the bottom." My stepmom followed with, "Gentle. You're so gentle." My dad finished with, "You used to save squirrels when you were a kid!"

My response: "I've been saving it up for FORTY-TWO YEARS!"

I've never felt so strong, so confident, so assertive, so happy! I've also never felt so sore, so bruised, so exhausted, and so busy. My knees are saying, "Um. Excuse me. What the H-E-double-toothpicks are you doing to us?!?"

I have so much more to say, so much more to share, so many stories to tell.

"How to pee while wearing speed skates."
"First day of skating in a pack."
"Endurance. Schmendurance. Where's my water bottle?"
"Are those tights or tattoos?"
"Did you say 40 in 10?"
"How to hand out fliers in the snow."

For now, I have to go to sleep. I have skills practice tomorrow!

Oh, did I mention? I LOVE PLAYING ROLLER DERBY!
