If this summer's World Cup has taught us anything, it's that Americans continue to have little patience for the concept of an important sporting event ending in a draw, let alone a 0-0 draw. True soccer fans understand the value of a come-from-behind tie or a hard-fought scoreless match, but WPS is desperately trying to draw fans from the broader community. Goals bring interest. Winners and losers are easy to understand. The time has come to institute a golden goal overtime followed by a shootout. Players may hate them, but they are moments of supreme drama. The NHL started using the shootout regularly a few years ago, and it may finally be crawling out of the hole it dug itself in the past decade. WPS' aims are more modest, but with attendance numbers falling, the league needs to consider rules changes to bring more excitement.
