Lingerie Football Hangs Up Garters for 2012

Oh my. If you thought it was tough during the NFL lockout last year, try going without the Lingerie Football League this season.The LFL just announced it is hanging up it’s garters for 2012.

Chairman and Commissioner Mitchell S. Mortaza released the following statement on the future plans of LFL Football in the United States.

…we have officially moved, not suspended the LFL U.S. season to April 2013. This move in schedule enables our LFL US teams extra preparation which ultimately will greatly improve the product on the field in 2013.

Our shift in schedule has also enabled us to kickoff the Lingerie Football League’s international growth and strategy to include the premiere of LFL Canada (Fall 2012) and LFL Australia (Summer 2013).

The league used to play its games during the traditional fall football season but once they relaunch they are planning a spring and summer schedule. The warm weather season totally makes sense since uniforms consist of, well, lingerie. There are a couple responses you might have upon hearing the news that the league is going on hiatus. And your response probably depends on whether you think the league is really about football or about women wearing bras, panties, knee-high socks and unattached garter clips. The LFL, based in Los Angeles, was created in 2009. The three-year-old venture features all-female, seven-member teams playing full contact football in lingerie and pads. Eleven U.S. cities had teams last year — Baltimore, Chicago, Cleveland, Green Bay, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Minneapolis Orlando, Philadelphia, Seattle and Tampa. The Los Angeles Temptation are the defending champions.

Since it’s inception, women’s groups have been vocal about the exploitive nature of women in lingerie and football pads throwing the pigskin around on the gridiron. Critics say the league degrades female athletes through “pernicious objectification.”
