In a nod to girl power, MAC Cosmetics announced that the company is partnering with DC Comics’ Wonder Woman to create a limited edition color cosmetics collection featuring the iconic superhero.
Set for a spring 2011 launch at all MAC locations worldwide, the lineup is expected to include lipsticks, eye shadows, blush and nail polish ranging in price from $13 to $49.50.
The announcement of the merchandising tie-in with MAC rides on the heels of Wonder Woman’s recently updated look in which she trades in her famous red bustier, hot pants and red knee-high boots for a costume closer to streetwear. The change coincides with a rewritten history for Wonder Woman’s alter ego Diana Prince, who now no longer grew up on a mythical Amazon island (the story goes that mysterious forces smuggle her away when she’s a baby).
The new look — with an understated “W” insignia, a midnight blue jacket and a fusion of black leggings and boots — is darker than the famed swimsuit-style outfit, and aims to be contemporary and functionall
J. Michael Straczynski, the new writer of the Wonder Woman comic book series, said, “If you’re going to make a statement about bringing Wonder Woman into the 21st century, you need to be bold and you need to make it visual. I wanted to toughen her up, and give her a modern sensibility.”
A NY Times article discussing the make-over states “The new costume will almost certainly be better received than the curveball thrown Wonder Woman in 1968, when she lost her powers, dressed mod and practiced martial arts. It took the attention of no less than Gloria Steinem to protest the change, and to help get the Amazon back into her star-spangled duds. Ms. Steinem went on to use Wonder Woman, resplendent in red, white and blue, on the cover of the first issue of Ms. magazine in 1972
Wonder Woman won’t be the first illustrated celebrity to grace MAC products. This September, MAC stores will be selling a 40-item collection featuring Disney’s most celebrated villains including Cruella De Vil of 101 Dalmatians, the Evil Queen from Snow White, and Maleficient, the wicked green-faced fairy fromSleeping Beauty. The colors for this collection are based off of the reproductions of the original Disney drawings of the characters.
So what product names and shades will the marketing mavens at DC and MAC come up with? The heroine will undoubtedly be featured on the packaging and we’re predicting bright blues, hues of gold and starlet red lipstick with nails to match. Golden Tiara eye shadow anyone?
Who says action stars can’t be chic?
There is no info on whether or not the MAC line will tie in with Warner’s long-awaited film version of the superhero.

I was open to WW getting an updated look, but I'm not finding this to be a change for the better.
