It’s been over a year since MMA Michelle Waterson took some time off to start a family. She gave birth to a lovely daughter Aryana in March and recently married her long time boyfriend.
“The Karate Hottie” (8-3) was on a two fight win streak, finishing all but one of her opponents she’s defeated. She announced this week she is back in training for a possible fight in November.
Wombat Sports was able to talk to Waterson about her last appearance in the cage on MTV’s “Bully Beatdown”; her return to the cage; and her new found role as mom and wife.

Wombat Sports: What’s it been like getting back to training after having the baby?
Michelle Waterson: I feel like I’m at a cross roads because on one hand I’m in heaven with my baby girl and my hubby, on the other hand my body has just gone through a ton of changes, and it’s a lot harder to get back into fight shape then I anticipated. Fighting is a selfish sport, motherhood is not at all, so I’m sorta in the gray right now.
WS: Have you been keeping track of MMA in your down time? What do you think of the state of women’s MMA?
MW: Just keeping up with family is hard to do with my little one, so I really haven’t had time to keep up with it. I support my teammates as much as I can. Women’s MMA does to me seem like it’s picking up some steam, which is a great thing! Let’s do it girls.
WS: The last time we saw you, you were in the MTV2′s Bully Beatdown cage. How was the experience and have you been getting more attention since then?
MW: Bully Beat down was super fun! I had a blast doing it. Everyone was real excited to see a girl fighter in the cage handling a female bully – they are the worst! Girls are just mean. I have to admit I was trying to take her legs out but she took them pretty well.
I did get some attention from it but at the time I was pregnant so, I really couldn’t capitalize on it! But I still get people that tell me, “Hey, I saw you on Bully Beat Down! you were awesome!” It’s a pretty cool feeling.

WS: We hear that your next match will most likely be back in North Dalota – do we have a date and opponent?
MW: Some time in Nov and no opponent yet! i’ll keep ya posted.
WS: Anyone you’d like to thank?
MW: Team Jackson/ Winkeljohn. All my teammates who supported me all throughout my pregnancy and reassured me that I could and still can be a great mom and still fight (Holly, Nohime, and Jules). My birthing coach Pam England. My family, my manager Jahani Curl. And of course my hubby Joshua Gomez. love you all! Couldn’t have done it without you.
