Boxers Katie Taylor & Queen Underwood to be Feature in Official Olympic Film

Wombat sports is dedicated to women in combat sports. Filmmaker Caroline Rowland will chronicle 12 athletes om their way to gold at the London Olympics in her film “First”. The documentary has been approved by both the International Olympic Committee and the London 2012 Organising Committee (LOCOG).

Among those being features will be Irish boxer Katie Taylor and America’s Queen Underwood; who are competing for the first ever women’s boxing Gold medal.

Taylor is one of the best boxers on the planet, competing in the 60 kg weight class. Having won Gold at the AIBA World Championships they past 4 years; she is favored to stand atop of the podium at the Olympics.

Taylor will be the Flag Bearer for Ireland in the opening ceremonies.

Underwood got the invite from the  Tripartite Selection Committee for the Olympics and will also compete in the 60 kg weight class.The 28 year old is hoping to make history as one of the first American woman to win a medal in boxing.

Other female athletes being featured include:

  • American swimmer Missy Franklin
  • British handball player Holly Lam-Moores
  • Velodrome cyclist Laura Trott
  • Aussie BMX rider Caroline Buchanan
  •  Kosovan Judo champ Majlinda Kelmendi (who will represent Albania)

The film will debut at the BFI London Film Festival in October.

The Olympic women’s boxing tournament starts Aug. 5. You can watch the bouts on http://www.nbcolympics.com starting at 5:30 a.m. eastern.
