EDITOR'S NOTE: AnnGaff and LesleyHiggins are writing these previews for the USA Track & Field Championships, taking place this weekend in Eugene, OR, based on their firsthand Track & Field experience. Gaffigan and Higgins competed against each other in college, with Gaffigan representing the Nebraska Huskers and Higgins representing the Colorado Buffs. Both women competed last year in the 3000m Steeplechase at the Olympic Trials. This year, the two are spectators-from-afar of the USATF Championships/World Team Trials; Higgins is out with a broken foot and Gaffigan gave birth to a baby girl in May.
Final on Saturday, June 27 at 4:30pm
Top 10 entry throws:
Kim Kreiner 60.30
Rachel Yurkovich 59.62
Kara Patterson 58.56
Dana Pounds-Lyon 57.83
Katie Coronado 55.18
Alicia DeShasier 54.80
Michelle Thompson 54.21
Kayla Wilkinson-Colgrove 52.73
Meghan Briggs 52.67
Samantha Ford 52.07
My Picks:
1. Rachel Yurkovich
2. Kim Kreiner
3. Kara Patterson
Two-time Olympian Kim Kreiner threw her entry of 60.30m in June of 2009. Her personal best of 64.19m is from 2007. Rachel Yurkovich is the NCAA champion from Oregon and threw her 59.62m at the NCAA meet just a couple weeks ago. Kara Patterson was the 2008 Olympic Trials champion. Ultimately I think the win will go to the Oregon girl in front of her home crowd.
