Create your own highlight reel for 2016

written by Erica Quam

The new year is full of hope and possibilities.

Wouldn’t it be fun to have your very own movie trailer - a preview - for the year ahead?…something to get you excited for the highlights of 2016 and better prepared for the challenges that will come up?

Do you let yourself dream? Do you take any time to close your eyes and imagine what’s possible for you in the year ahead? What big goals are on the horizon?

Most of the time we set self-imposed limits on what we THINK we can achieve. Many people 1) don’t dream big enough 2) don’t know what they want 3) or aren’t clear enough in their asking.

To begin - open your mind, allow yourself the time and space to dream, and then set a clear and powerful intention.

Unfortunately, most people get caught up in the HOW. If they don’t know exactly how they will do something, they are afraid to acknowledge WHAT they want.

The powerful thing about intention, is you don’t have to know the how. All you have to do is set the intention - get clear on the WHAT - and let it go. The how will become clear as you take small steps towards the vision that you have for yourself.

Setting your intention is simple:

  • First - write WHAT you want.
  • Next - write WHY you want it.
  • Finally - write WHEN you intend to have it by.

There is power in your why. If you’ve ever watched the TED talk by Simon Sinek, he explains a concept called the Golden Circle - the powerful of your why: why you do what you do…or in this case, why you want what you want. This exercise helps you tap into that emotional level of your goal. It takes you from your rational brain (where you have to have all the data and all the details) to your emotional brain (to tap into your intuition and your feelings).

What’s the purpose of setting a date?

It’s important to give the universe a deadline and put parameters on WHEN you want your goal to happen. This scares many people. It’s scary because there’s part of you - at the subconscious level - that is scared that it won’t happen. You have to give the inner time to catch up with the outer. Setting a date keeps you moving, gives your brain a reminder, and allows your subconscious mind to work through things when the conscious mind takes a break.

Create your highlight reel for 2016…today!

Most end of the season banquets have a slideshow or a highlight reel from the season. What if you went ahead and created your highlight reel for next year in advance?

There are a few simple ways to do this: create a vision board, make a mind movie, or write out a simple timeline. Whichever one seems do-able to you is the right choice.

Images and words are powerful. When you do something to bring your goals to life - through words and images - you begin to imprint them onto your subconscious brain.

I can’t wait to see what amazing things are in store for you in the year ahead!

Take this a step further: share one of your goals here so this community of coaches can support you AND cheer you on!
