Derek Fisher has been named general manager of the Los Angeles Sparks and will be in his third year as head coach of the team in 2021.

Derek Fisher has been named general manager of the Los Angeles Sparks while remaining the head coach, the team announced Tuesday.

Fisher is a Los Angeles basketball legend, having played 13 seasons and won five championships with the Lakers. His record in two years as the Sparks’ head coach is 37-19. LA lost in the semifinals in 2019 and in the second round in 2020.

Here’s what Fisher had to say about his promotion:

I’m honored to be named general manager of the LA Sparks and continue my role as head coach. This organization has a dynamic history, the most passionate fans in the WNBA, and an ownership group committed to success on and off the court. I’m thankful for the opportunity and excited to guide this team as we pursue a fourth WNBA title.

In addition to expanding Fisher’s role, the Sparks have named Michael Fischer vice president of player personnel and Eric Holoman chief executive officer and governor.

Meanwhile, Natalie White has been named interim president and COO of the team with the departure of Danita Johnson.
