Check out this parody of Elizabeth Lambert looking for a date. The original post is here. Their first paragraph suggests to me that this was all in fun...that they are parodying the ridiculous conclusions people are jumping to about Lambert just because she was *gasp* physical in a soccer game.
I laughed a bit during the video...it was funny to see her beat the guy up, I'll admit...but by the end I wasn't sure if I should be laughing...did it go too far? Were they laughing with Lambert or at her?
At any rate, I'm surprised that people are so surprised that women's soccer is a very physical game. Yes, sometimes you even get knocked to the ground, especially if you've been elbowing someone all day long...I highly doubt Lambert's violence was totally unprovoked. If the ref isn't making any calls, sometimes your patience and self control wear thin. But I digress. Your thoughts on this video?

Whoa. This is offensive on so many levels. I do not see it as a parody at all. It is cearly attacking Lambert personally. If it was a parody of the media and cultural response, it would have invoked some of those issues and made her into a more sympathetic character. But this video was clearly sexist, homophobic (the chicks/dudes question) and racist--her comment about wanting a NEW Mexican, instead of, it implies, an immigrant.

I think when she said New Mexican, she was referring to the school/team she plays for (Univ of NM). I don't think that was meant to be racist.
I could also see the chicks/dudes question as being a parody on society...people seem to automatically ask if a woman is a lesbian if she shows anger and aggression like Lambert did in her game. That's what's really homophobic.
I honestly don't know. I'd like to hear an explanation from the makers of the video.

Ann: The effect seems to me rather some of both--we laugh with her and at her. I hesitate to guess what the videomakers had in mind; it may have been nothing other than to be funny.
