Evidently there may have been a huge misunderstanding about what transpired last month between Gilbert Arenas and Javaris Crittenton. While it has been widely reported the two Washington Wizards players pulled guns on each other, Gilbert Arenas has a different version of events. According to the New York Times:

Arenas acknowledged storing three firearms in his locker and said he took them to the arena because he did not want them in his home after the birth of his third child.

Arenas claims he had no intention to bring the guns into the locker room, he was in fact bringing them out of the locker room:

“Yes, I showed them to someone. I showed them to team security when I handed them to them and said give them to the police. Yes, I took them out of this locker room. I had to take them out to get them out of here to give to security.”

The NBA is going to feel really stupid after they investigate and find out it is common practice for parents to immediately babyproof a home following the birth of a third child. Arenas removing the guns from his own home was the absolute right thing for him to have done. As for the alleged argument with Crittenton, quite possibly another misunderstanding related to babyproofing. Maybe Arenas brought out his guns and Crittenton saw them and said, ”Oh I have a gun too.” and then Crittenton showed his gun to Arenas. Arenas may have gotten testy and told Crittenton, “You can’t bring that to my house, you know I have a third child.” And then Crittenton lost his temper and this is why someone allegedly overheard Crittenton tell Arenas “I’m not your punk!”

And if that’s the real story? I’m hanging it up right now. Whatever the supposed reason was for the altercation between these two teammates. There is no justification for bringing a weapon to the Verizon Center. Loaded, unloaded, doesn’t matter. It’s just plain wrong. It’s particularly upsetting if you know the history of the Wizards. You see the Wizards were once known as The Washington Bullets and in 1996,when crime rates had gone through the roof, owner Abe Polin decided to change the name of the team. Pollin believed the name “Bullets” had a negative connotation and held a contest to rename the team. Wizards was the landslide winning entry for the team’s new name.

Arenas is maintaining for now that he brought the guns to work because he could lock them away and he didn’t want the guns at home. However, this still doesn’t explain what any of that had to do with Crittenton. The NBA continues it’s investigation as does local law enforcement.
