The nats have announced the roster for the team which will take part in the 10-game tour leading up to the Olympics. Funny how the press release doesn't even name most of the players, instead identifying them by career highlights, and you have to click on a separate document to get the actual roster.
Here's a video (Facebook log-in required)* from selection camp, which was euphemistically called a 'festival.' Ruggiero can't contain her enthusiasm for being interviewed.
Does anyone else hate Typepad's new "blog it" button with a fiery passion?
*I'm going to download a FB video converter and will try to have the vid embedded here tomorrow.
EDITOR's NOTE: Thanks to Cory Shubert, the photographer who shot the video, for adding the videos below in the comments section!

I noticed that you have linked the video of my interview with the Team USA Olympians on your blog about the USA Hockey women's festival. I'm not sure I understand the meaning of your post? First - who are the nats? Second - what do you feel is wrong about identifying and showcasing these women by their career highlights. We do that for men all the time? Those career highlights are incredible things that most people will never acomplish or get the oppertunity to do! Personally I think the fact that it was called a festival was a great way to bring out the fans. To create a following for these women who, as hockey players, are our only female role models. Also the U18 National team (who just brought home the gold from the U18 World Championship in Fussen Germany) were also there. These girls were incredible to meet and talk with. For all of us from Ice it was one of the coolest experiences we've ever had - getting to meet and work with these women.
Just wondering if you could explain a little bit more about that post. Thanks.

The press release is actually quite detailed and impressive. It was called a festival because the U18 team was also there. In addition, the press conference was the kick off for the Qwest Tour and the Hockey Canada Cup which begins next week. All four top women's hockey teams from US, Canada, Sweden and Finland get a chance to compete against each other before the Olympics - in Vancouver, which is doubly cool.
The atmosphere was very "festival like" and packed with fans - you should've been there - there are two few chances to see these incredible athletes skate - it was ah-mazing.
Can't speak for Angela, but I can say that all the athletes in general seemed more reticent as the days wore on. The final roster picks were bittersweet for many of them. It's much different for women hockey players because, for many of them who don't make the cut, there is no where else to play.
It was a fantastic festival!

p.s. as feminists we should be promoting events like this that showcase the top female athletes not bashing them for being titled something you don't necessarily understand. as feminists we should be doing everything we can to promote women like Angela Ruggiero who've made it to the top not assuming we know what's going through her head in a time like that.
As feminists - these are our role models. Lets treat them like that.
