Anastasia Rodionova becomes an Australian citizen
Anastasia Rodionova has become an Australian citizen at a ceremony in Melbourne today and she joined Jarmila Groth who also received her Australian passport last month.
Rodionova has been based in Melbourne since 2005 and she will become Australia’s No.3 ranked women’s player after a solid 2009 season.
In 2010 she will make her debut under her new flag at the Brisbane International.
“I am so excited and proud to be an Aussie,” said Rodionova. “Gaining citizenship of this great country makes me feel like my adopted home is now finally my true home.
“I’d like to thank the Australian Government and every one at Tennis Australia for helping me for all of these years to achieve this amazing result. I am very honoured to represent Australia at every single tournament I play and I hope to make our nation proud.”
“I hope Tennis Australia will contact me soon, since I have the Australian citizenship now,” she said. “If I could play Fed Cup that would be great. I was really looking forward to that.”
Rodionova says she is excited about being able to represent her new country.
“[It's] tough to explain, it’s a really strange feeling and more it’s relief,” she said. “I was waiting for it for such a long time.”
Rodionova said she was as nervous before the 20-question citizenship test as she is before a big match – but she scored 100 per cent. “I studied hard and knew most of the answers anyway,” she said.
