Casey Dellacqua wins wildcard into the main draw of Australian Open 2010
Casey Dellacqua beat Olivia Rogowska 16 76 63 to win a wildcard into the main draw of Australian Open 2010.
Dellacqua, who was out of the WTA Sony Ericsson Tour due to a shoulder surgery and tendonitis in her foot, found herself 1 set down and 2-5 in the second set but she saved three match points to take the final match into the decider and then claimed the win.
“That’s all part of the game, hanging in there and being tough and winning matches when you’re down and out a bit,” said Dellacqua. “The last three matches I didn’t start great in any of the matches and I was able to pull it back.
“At the higher level you can’t afford to do that so much so it’s something I need to work on and I guess the positive is that I got through this week, won all these matches, (I) haven’t lost. I’ve had a lot of court time which was my main goal for this week and just to come through as the winner was a little bit unexpected.”
Dellacqua said she was relieved to have secured a main draw berth at her home Grand Slam.
“I was just wanting to hang in there really,” said Dellacqua. “I thought Olivia played a great set and a half and I wondered if she could keep it up. I thought if I just hang in there I can maybe sneak into the match and I just hung in there.
“Once I got that second set I thought ‘I’m not going to stay out here this long just to lose’ so I hung in there and I was glad I was able to win today.”
“I’m so excited to know I’ve earned my spot back in the Australian Open with such great memories here,” said Dellacqua. “It’s exciting to be back playing and I’ve been out for a while so I’m just looking forward to get back into that high level and to keep improving my tennis and this week has been a great start for me.”
Rogowska was philosophical in defeat.
“Casey played some pretty good tennis when she was down so credit to her,” said Rogowska. “She definitely won that so she deserved it. I guess that’s why she ‘s a top quality player. I’m little disappointed but I played some good tennis this week so it was good.”
“My ranking’s direct into the qualifying of the Australian Open so if I did play quallies I’d be just as happy,” she added. “It’s still a Grand Slam, still lots of ranking points to be won, so I’m looking forward to it.“I’ve y got nothing to lose. I’d go out and play tough and play solid so if I did end up playing in the main draw of the Australian Open this year I’ve learnt a lot, I feel like I’m much more experienced and like I can do lots of damage.”
