Melanie Oudin wins Fed Cup by BNP Paribas Heart Award

Melanie Oudin was honored with the inaugural Fed Cup by BNP Paribas Heart Award.
Oudin, was presented with the Award by Francesco Ricci Bitti, ITF President, ahead of the Fed Cup by BNP Paribas Final between Italy and USA, being staged in Reggio Calabria on 7-8 November.

The Fed Cup by BNP Paribas Heart Award aims to recognise a player who has represented her country with distinction, shown exceptional courage on court and demonstrated outstanding commitment to the team during Fed Cup by BNP Paribas.

The 2009 Fed Cup by BNP Paribas Heart Award was decided by fans who gave their vote online at FedCup.com and FedCup.com/es.

Oudin was nominated for the Award along with Alexa Glatch (USA), Flavia Pennetta (ITA) and Francesca Schiavone (ITA).

Melanie received a unique Heart bracelet and a cheque for $5,000 to donate to her chosen charity, the Children’s at Egleston, a hospital in Atlanta, Georgia.

Melanie Oudin said: “I’m so honoured to be part of the U.S. Fed Cup team and winning the Heart Award makes it that much more special for me. This year has been such an amazing year and it is really wonderful to be able to donate $5,000 to Children’s at Egleston an organisation that helped save my little sister’s life.”

Francesco Ricci Bitti, ITF President, said: “This new joint initiative by the ITF and BNP Paribas serves a dual purpose. It honours the true heart of the competition, the players who fight so hard for their countries, as well as benefiting the charities of their choice. We
celebrate the achievements of Melanie Oudin and of all the players who showed their courage and commitment to Fed Cup by BNP Paribas in 2009 and the future.”

Antoine Sire, BNP Paribas Head of Brand, Communication and Quality, said: “By supporting this initiative, which combines social engagement with the promotion of women’s tennis, we remain committed to our active partnership policy that has united BNP Paribas and the Fed
Cup since 2005.”
