The indoor track & field season snuck up on me! Here we are at Millrose Games weekend already! A few cool facts about the Millrose Games:

  • Held annually in Madison Square Garden.
  • The meet started in 1908 when employees of the Wanamaker's department store formed the Millrose Track Club to hold a meet.
  • At the 2001 Millrose Games, Stacy Dragila became the first woman to clear 15 feet in the pole vault.
  • It is the first stop in the USATF VISA Championship Series
  • In addition to high-quality professional competition, the meet also hosts boys' and girls' mile races, which include some of the nation's top young talent

You can watch the meet on ESPN2 at 8pm EST...LIVE! Our very own Joanna Hayes is the in-house emcee.

Here are the women to watch (full start lists are HERE):

  • 60m Hurdles: Priscilla Lopes-Schliep (@GoPriscilla) of Canada (and my former Husker teammate - Go Big Red!) takes on former NCAA rival Ginnie Powell of the USA.
  • 60m: Look for a very tight race between 5-time Olympic Medalist Veronica Campbell-Brown of Jamaica and USA's Muna Lee (@MunaLee), who is coming off a stellar 2009 outdoor season, where she set a personal best 10.85 in the 100m. Also in the 60m and on Twitter: Bianca Knight (@MissBianca2U), Lisa Barber (@lisabarber80), Marshevet Hooker-Myers (@marshevetmyers)
  • Mile: Sally Kipyego of Kenya (arguably one of the greatest NCAA distance runners of all time) takes on rookie pro Sarah Bowman, who ran for Tennessee and has now signed with New Balance. This could be a rematch of the 2009 NCAA Indoor Championships where Bowman nipped Kipyego by 0.03 seconds at the tape, setting a meet record of 4:29.72. Also in the mile and on Twitter: Sarah Hall (@sarahall3)
  • 400m: Monica Hargrove seems to be the favorite over Mary Wineberg (@wineberg400), who is returning to competition after having a baby girl last year.
