Cyborg-Coenen Staredown at Strikeforce Miami Weigh-ins

I just found out after perusing some posts on BloodyElbow.com that Marloes Coenen only made $2,000 getting pummeled by Cyborg at Strikeforce Miami. I don't know what she would have made if she had beaten Cyborg but it certainly wasn't going to be 6 figures like Nick Diaz and Robbie Lawler got. And it should be. Any woman who gets in the ring with Cris Cyborg Santos should get paid 5 figures...and if she actually beats her, should get as much as the highest-paid male because it's Cyborg.

Strikeforce Miami Payouts:

Nick Diaz $100,000
Marius Zaromskis $30,000
Diaz defeated Zaromskis via TKO (strikes)

Cris "Cyborg" Santos $35,000 ($15,000 to show, $15,000 to win, $5,000 championship bonus)
Marloes Coenen $2,000
Santos defeated Coenen via TKO (strikes)

Herschel Walker $600 - donated large fight purse to charity
Greg Nagy $5,000
Walker defeated Nagy via TKO (strikes)

Robbie Lawler $100,000
Melvin Manhoef $5,000
Lawler defeated Manhoef via KO (punch)

Bobby Lashley $50,000
Wes Sims $25,000
Lashley defeated Sims via TKO (strikes)

Jay Hieron $65,000 ($30,000 to show, $35,000 to win)
Joe Riggs $30,000
Hieron defeated Riggs via unanimous decision

Pablo Alfonso $3,000 ($1,500 to show, $1,500 to win)
Marcos DaMotta $2,500
Alfonso defeated DaMotta via submission (armbar)

Hadar Hassan $2,000 ($1,000 to show, $1,000 to win)
Ryan Keenan $2,000
Hassan defeated Keenan via KO (punch)

John Kelly $2,000 ($1,000 to show, $1,000 to win)
Sabah Homasi $1,000
Kelly defeated Homasi via submission (rear naked choke)

Michael Byrnes $2,000 ($1,000 to show, $1,000 to win)
David Zitnik $1,500
Byrnes defeated Zitnick via majority decision

David Gomez $2,000 ($1,000 to show, $1,000 to win)
Craig Oxley $1,500
Gomez defeated Oxley via unanimous decision

Joe Ray $1,500 ($1,000 to show, $500 to win)
John Clarke $1,000
Ray defeated Clark via TKO (strikes)

Whew! That's what you call earning your pay: proof of Coenen's dedication to her sport. Erin Toughill is likely next to face Cyborg. Given her credentials, status as MMA pioneer, marketability (like Carano, she is a former American Gladiator), and the attractiveness of the matchup, I suspect Toughill will be compensated a little more reasonably.

"I feel bad for Coenen. Sure the 2k is only disclosed. Sure it doesn't include off the books $$ and sponsorships. But DAMN! 2k!

Rob - nice html! I hope they get the Toughill-Cyborg matchup agreed upon soon. Slappy San - thanks for the comment. I've been told by @ACCBiggz that a lot of the reported amounts are not the full truth because of workarounds for foreign taxes but at any rate, even being compensated five times the reported amount isn't enough in my opinion.

It's not the Cyborg is a good fighter in fact I think Coenen is probably a better fighter but she shouldn't have moved up in weight to fight Cyborg. At least Toughill is a legit 145 fighter although Santos is a heavy 145. I doubt santos will ever take a fight against a legit 145 fighter even Carano should be fighting at 140.

What weight does Coenen normally fight at? I guess I didn't realize 145 was up for her. It definitely isn't up for Toughill so I hope that fight happens...do you think Cyborg would dodge it? Has she done that before?

Typically she fights at 135, her last fight prior to Cyborg was at 135 which was less than 3 months prior to the fight to this fight. To add 10 pounds of muscle mass in that amount of time would be difficult to say the least. In my opinion that is why cyborg was physically so dominate, plus you gotta think those are dehydrated weights. As a bit of history in an April 11th fight Santos weighed in at 152 for a fight slated for 145 so needless to say she's big.

I'm not sure if she would dodge that fight or not but she has a history of fighting smaller fighers so we'll see. Not saying its her fault because honestly she is a large woman and their aren't that many female fighters at that size yet. Ideally, I would like her to drop to 135 to even things out but if people are taking the fights then their is no pressure to do so.

Oh wow, you're right. Normally fighters of taking OFF at LEAST 10 pounds in the weeks leading up to their fight. I remember the fight in April where she was way over. I was really annoyed because if you're that much over, it's like you didn't even care to try.

I wonder if Strikeforce thinks it's a good business decision to try to find someone who can beat her or if they think it's better to keep her challenged but on top?

If the fight comes off, Toughill (5'10", street-weight ~160 lb) will be largest woman Cyborg has faced. She used to fight in the 160-170 lb range but dropped 20-25 lb so she could compete for the Strikeforce 145-pound title. This makes the fight particularly appealing to many: Cyborg will for once be fighting someone as strong as, if not stronger than, she is.

If I had to guess, I would say that Strikeforce is banking on Toughill taking the title from Cyborg. That would set up a very marketable match between two former American Gladiators (Carano vs Toughill).

Good point Rob. If Toughill can beat Cyborg, she will dominate Gina. I hope Gina brings her A-game to the next title shot. It seemed like the pressure got to her at the last one, and there was a LOT of pressure. But it's part of the game.

I for one will buy Showtime for a month to watch Cyborg-Toughill if they make it happen.

Also, let's hope they start building up the other weight classes for women as well. Plenty of worthy fighters out there.
