Emily Chebet winning 2010 World Cross Country Championships over Linet Masai

Pre-race co-favorite Linet Masai was outsprinted by a countrywoman for the second straight year to lose the lead and take silver at the World Cross Country Championships. Masai, just 20 years old, led a very aggressive race over the muddy and difficult course and appeared to have dropped her competitors for good after the two jumps in the middle of the last lap. Emily Chebet rounded the final turn looking strong, however and was able to sprint past Masai and win by just a few steps.

Other co-favorite Tirunesh Dibaba was 10 seconds back from the leaders going into the final lap of the 8000m race and was not a medalist.

The only medal not won by Ethiopia, Eriitrea or Kenya was the bronze medal won by the United States team of Shalane Flanagan (12th), Molly Huddle (19th), Magedelena Lewy Boulet (20th) and Amy Hastings (25th).
