Many teams won big games, and many players had impressive seasons but two things stood out above the rest to me in D3 Hoops in 2009. The first is pink. Pink shoelaces. Pink warm-up shirts. Pink headbands. Pink ribbons. Pink uniforms. Over 1,000 teams participated in the WBCA Pink Zone games in 2009. NC State’s coach Kay Yow died on January 24, 2009 after a long battle with cancer. Although it was a sad day for women sports, it was also a day that would unite women’s basketball teams of all divisions across the country as players, coaches and fans wore pink.  Even the refs blew pink whistles. The 2009 campaign raised over $1.3 million, reached over 912,000 fans, unified more than 1,600 participating teams and organizations, and saw 56+ schools break attendance records at their event. Below are pictures from both DePauw University and Hope College’s Pink Zone games.

The second thing that comes to mind when looking back at 2009 is the unexpected national champion team. The George Fox Bruins’ returned no starters, played with 10 freshmen, went 32-0 and won the first D3 National Championship in school history. Early on, the Bruins’ were written off as a young team that would eventually be good, but this year would be only average. The team was originally picked to finish just middle of the pack in their conference. They first surprised everyone by managing to come out on top in their conference, winning for the sixth time in the past nine years. The second surprise came when the Bruins’ become the first team west of the Rocky Mountains to win a national title.
