What a great game for women’s college basketball. The Big Ten matchup exceeded my expectations as the game drew a huge crowd of 12,412 fans, and displayed a close, intense competition on national television.
I, for one, was eager to watch this game; although I wasn’t quite sure which team I would cheer for. As an Ohio native, I usually cheer for Ohio State whenever they play, but this year I transferred to Hope College in Michigan, so I feel I have a tie to Michigan State as well (State, because obviously as an OSU fan I could never cheer for Michigan). Plus, I’m a big fan of Allyssa DeHaan. Her height was the first thing that drew me in. I’m always interested in tall people because I feel I can relate, even if she does stand at least 9 inches taller than me. Ultimately, I decided just to enjoy the game for once, rather than choosing sides.
And enjoy I did. The game was close, and seemed as if it could go either way. But with Samantha Prahalis and Jantel Lavender combining for 52 points (Prahalis with a career-high of 32), MSU fell short. It really came down to who made shots at the end, which was Ohio State. Michigan State went without a field goal for the final 5:57 and went 0-for-8 from 3-point range in the second half.
