41. That’s the number of points UNC lost to Connecticut by on Saturday. When both teams are ranked in the top 10 in the country, you would expect a closer game. UNC can at least take some comfort in the fact that they aren’t alone. Against the nine top-10 teams Connecticut has faced in this current winning streak, they have won by an average of just over 27 points.
This win against the Tarheels extended their incredible winning streak to 54 games, tying them with Lousiana Tech (1980-82) for the second longest winning streak in Division I women’s basketball history. This leaves them only behind their very own 2001-03 team’s streak of 70 consecutive wins.
Previously, North Carolina had only lost to Michigan State. Tarheels coach Sylvia Hatchell said, “I just told the players, ‘Forget this game was ever played. Let’s go home and get ready for the ACC.’ ’’ The Tarheels and the Huskies will both face 10-5 teams in their next games, with UNC playing at Virginia Tech and UConn at Marquette.
