Until Alex Bentley hit a three with 11 seconds left in regulation to tie the score at 65, the Boilermakers had been leading most of the game, but Penn State was always chipping away at Purdue’s lead. The Boilermakers took control again in the overtime and came out with an 80-76 win over Penn State. This game ended Penn State’s six game winning streak and was Purdue’s second upset win of the week (they beat the #4 OSU Buckeyes on Sunday).
Penn State had the lead after the first three minutes of the game, but then Purdue scored the next 11 points to take a 15-11 lead. With 12 minutes remaining in the first half, Penn State had battled back to take the lead again. For the remainder of the half the scoring seemed to go back and forth. Bentley hit a three to give Penn State the lead, then Purdue scored nine consecutive points, followed by Penn State scoring five of the final eight points of the half. Purdue led 33-29 at the break.
Penn State’s Bentley scored the first points of the second half, but it quickly became all Purdue. Grant and Rayburn took over the game and gave Purdue a 45-37 lead with 15 minutes remaining. Penn State, yet again, made a comeback and brought the game back within three points. Following what seemed to be the theme of this game, Purdue took off again and then Penn State chipped their way back into the game, then Purdue built up another lead and Penn State worked hard to keep the game close in the remaining minutes. With 4:17 remaining, neither team scored for the next two minutes. Finally Grant converted a lay-up and then on Purdue’s next possession, Bentley grabbed a rebound and hit a transition jumper to bring the score to 62-60, Purdue still with the lead. With just under two minutes remaining, Penn State had a defensive stop and Bentley hit another jumper and was fouled for a three-point play to put Penn State in the lead 63-62. Purdue took the lead back with 39 seconds remaining, making the score 64-62. Grant later missed a jumper but Jodi Howell was fouled and sent to the line. She was only successful on one of her two free throw attempts but that gave Purdue a 65-63 lead. 26 seconds remained on the clock and Bentley took the ball down the court and hit a jumper to tie the game at 65 with 11 seconds left.
The game went into overtime, which was just as exciting as the regulation play. The Boilermakers came out to a good start, taking a five-point lead. The Lions brought the game back within one point after a layup by Trogele and a three-pointer by Grant. With 12 seconds left, Purdue was leading by three. Trogele went one-of-two at the free throw line making it 78-76. Trogele grabbed her own rebound but missed the put-back attempt, which could have sent the game into a second overtime. The final two points of the game were free throws scored by Houser to make the final 80-76.
It was a great week for Purdue with two big wins in close games. Brittany Rayburn led the Boilermakers against Penn State with 26 points and K.K. Houser added 18 points, making all of her 13 free throws. Houser also had six rebounds. Purdue took advantage of Penn State’s sloppy play by scoring 20 points off turnovers.
