Don’t call her “the next” anyone, because she simply won’t be. She is the first Samantha Steele and as a sideline reporter she isn’t striving to be like someone else, she simply wants to be herself in a field where as a young, blonde female that can be difficult to do. Though it may be tough, Sam is succeeding at being a sideline reporter for Fox College Sports, all the while staying true to who she is. This past weekend I was lucky enough to interview Sam, (who I should also mention is a woman I really look up to and hope to be like one day in the field of sports broadcasting) and got to hear some of her opinions, advice and experiences.
Sam grew up in Phoenix, Arizona, in a family where everyone played a sport. Her first was soccer, but she later went on to play just about every sport she could. Early on, she decided that she probably would never be as good as Mia Hamm and began to think about what the next best thing to professional sports would be. She quickly realized that Ahmad Rashad had the coolest job there was, so as a 4th grader Sam decided that’s what she would do, and she never changed her mind.
Sam attended The King’s College in NYC, Arizona State and then finished her last two years at Liberty. While in New York, she scored an internship with ABC Sports Radio and had the opportunity to interview all kinds of different famous athletes. She then moved from ABC Sports Radio to Sports Research for ABC Television. Some of the guys she met there, John Saunders, Craig James, Aaron Taylor and Doug Flutie are the guys she now considers her mentors. After three years of helping out with the College Football Studio Show, she went back to Phoenix and later to Liberty to finish up school. At Liberty she had the opportunity to be the sideline reporter and host for all football and men’s and women’s basketball games. After Liberty, Sam signed with Fox College Sports, which is where she is now.
After talking to her, I can tell you Sam is someone who is not taking a second for granted. It is also clear that what she loves about her job is that it’s all about the people. While she will be the first to tell you that there are many great people in the business of collegiate and professional athletics, I want to tell you that she is one of them. Check her out at http://www.samofsteele.com or follow her on twitter, @SamOnFCS.
The beginning of the interview was cut off, but Sam starts by talking about her experiences with interviews...
