Hard to believe, but March Madness is almost over… which means that the National Championship game is coming… which means, the next day, April 8, dreams will come true for the world’s top women’s basketball players. In other words, on Thursday April 8, the 2010 WNBA Draft will take place.

For those who don’t know a whole lot about the Draft, it is three rounds long. Not including trades, each of the 12 teams in the league get three picks. The top four picks are decided based on a process similar to the NBA’s Draft Lottery among the four teams that did not qualify for the playoffs the previous season. That leaves the order for the eight teams that did qualify to be based on team records. Whichever team had the highest record picks last, and so on. The first pick this year will go to the Connecticut Sun, after recently making a trade with the Minnesota Lynx who now have the second and third picks.

Some of this year’s top prospects include:  Jayne Appel, Tina Charles, Alysha Clark, Amber Harris, Kelsey Griffin, Allison Hightower, Epiphanny Prince, Monica Wright, and many others.  To take a closer look at the prospects, check out Lynx Draft Central 2010. This site includes pictures, stats, information and quotes about the different prospects of the Draft. Drafts are always surprising us and often prove our speculations to be wrong, but it is still always fun to speculate. Nate of Swish Appeal did just that, making a list of his predicted top 45 prospects.

Leading up to this day, we’ll see numerous mock drafts, analysis of players on tons of websites, and possibly even a trade or two where teams hope to move up. Tomorrow I will be part of a Pre-Draft Media Conference Call. ESPN Analysts Carolyn Peck and Rebecca Lobo, WNBA Coaches Jennifer Gillom, Cheryl Reeve and Nolan Richardson will all provide their thoughts and assessments on teams and prospects. Also included in the call will be top Draft prospects Allison Hightower, Danielle McCray, Epiphanny Prince, and Monica Wright. I’ll post again soon after to let you all know how that goes!
