Lauren "Darth" Cheney* scored the first goal of the WPS season just seven minutes into the match and Boston held on to defeat Washington 2-1. This marks the second year in a row that a rookie has garnered the league's first tally. Kelly Smith and Allie Long were the other scorers. The Freedom's Jim Gabarra was not at all gracious to his opponents in defeat, saying that his team's poor play at midfield caused the loss.

Good news for those who don't get Fox Soccer Channel. The WPS will be webcasting the Sky Blue/Red Stars match on its site. There's also supposed to be an audio feed for the Gold Pride/Athletica contest.

*Is it too mean to connect any player, however jokingly, to our Sith Lord former veep? Weigh in....

Freedom's Jim Gabarra should be embarrassed. I'm starting to wonder if Cat Whitehill is the coach? She seems to be running the show and making a complete mess of it. Boston looked sharp and ate Washington for dinner. Allie Long's goal was seriously good but that was about it for any life in that game for the freedom. I am not a fan of his new line up, starting with the back line right through the middle, and not starting Devanna. I am very unimpressed with Huffman and do not like Moros in the back. Awful mess.
