The Washington Freedom wore blue camouflage jerseys to celebrate Memorial Day in their match on Sunday. Dressing the players as 'soldiers' contributes to the idea that everything, but especially sports, can be analogized to war. This actually does a disservice to real soldiers because there is no human experience that compares to combat, which explains why so many of them are so broken when they come back (let alone come back from the second tour, and the third, and the fourth). Normalizing the experience is part of what contributes to the lack of total care, especially mental health care, given to many veterans. If 'war' is everywhere in our society, we think we understand its actual practice. It's not that bad (it's exciting, really), and they should just suck it up. Thoughtful members of the military also say that they are public servants of the civilian population, and that they fight in order to allow us to continue going about our lives. Wouldn't it honor their sacrifices more, then, if we didn't consistently pretend to be them, but instead proudly embraced our civilian identities?
