It's not the most brilliant of ideas to schedule an event with which you're hoping to gain attention for a neglected sport during the most popular sporting competition in the world. Wimbledon and the LPGA Championship are events of longstanding, and while they're probably taking a hit, tennis and golf are not going anywhere on the popularity scale (less than football, but still on the radar). On the other hand, the ISF should probably fire the person in charge of placing the Softball World Cup at exactly this juncture. If this event was supposed to be a showcase for the Olympic Committee of the reasons why they made a mistake in excluding softball from the games, it would be better if any of them were watching. The U.S. squeaked past China in the seventh 1-0 yesterday and Graham Hays may have been the only American paying attention. And he's getting paid. I have no doubt that Graham would have been paying attention anyway, but it must be pointed out that right now it's his job. The competition should be edifying since it includes many nations better known for other things. The No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency on its own might have a better tournament than Botswana's team as a whole, which has already had a perfect game thrown against it by China. Chinese Taipei is fielding its own team. The Dominican Republic, the baseball powerhouse, sent a team as well. The Czechs are even in attendance. As usual, the United States, Canada, and to a lesser degree Japan are the favorites, although China has certainly started strongly. The schedule of play may be found here, although be warned that the ISF seems to have put the same person in charge of web design as it did in charge of choosing dates. WSB will keep you posted.
