Washington coach Loree Payne was on the road recruiting for the Huskies this week when she got the call -- she was selected to head the University of Puget Sound.
The position became open when Suzy Barcomb took the head coaching job at Cal State East Bay in June. Barcomb left the Loggers as the program's most successful coach in history after 13 years with a 261-92 record.
Payne, a two-time All-Pac-10 player who was key in the 2001 Elite Eight run, has seven years of experience coaching on the West coast. She began her career at Northwest Nazarene University, then moved to the University of Portland before spending the past three seasons as an assistant at UW.
For the Huskies, she was the recruiting coordinator and worked with the perimeter players. Payne (pictured right by Washington) also helped guide current Huskies as the team's academic liaison.
"I am so excited to be part of the University of Puget Sound family," said Payne in a released statement. "This is an amazing opportunity at an excellent university with a great tradition in academics and women's basketball. I feel honored to be chosen to continue the tradition of success that has been built by Coach Barcomb and the alumna of this program."
Payne is the final coach from Tia Jackson's 2009-10 program to leave. Although rumors swirled about Jackson being fired, she instead opted not to renew Judy Spoelstra's contract while Fred Applin left to assist at East Carolina University.
The Huskies were 13-18 last season, losing in the opening round of the conference tournament. UW did accept an invitation to the inaugural Women's Basketball Invitational, but lost in the second round.
Jackson already added assistants Kyle Locke and Greg Nared to her staff for the 2010-11 season.
