Storm rookie Alison Lacey was surfing the web a lot during her team's three-game road trip through the Eastern Conference. An alum of Iowa State, she was shocked to see pictures of her school's gym under water after record flooding in Ames.
"I talked to Coach (Bill) Fennelly and he said it was weird to see the basketball court floating," said Lacey of Hilton Coliseum, pictured right by The Associated Press. "It was weird to see the whole university shut down. But it's funny because I remember 10 years it flooded and it seemed just as bad. We learned about it in class. To see it happen again, no one thought it would.
"It's good to see the football players helping out and everyone has come together, so that's good."
Lacey hasn't had time to talk former teammates due to travel. She hit her first three-pointer of the season in a win against Atlanta on Aug. 10 and has played double-digit minutes in three of the team's past four games as Storm coach Brian Agler has rested his starters.
The native Australian did communicate with friends via Facebook, however.
"They were saying they couldn't drink the water and there were lines outside the (grocery store), trying to get water," said Lacey, whose school's athletic facilities were hit the hardest. "That has definitely affected people -- not being able to go anywhere or drink anything. It's weird to see places I used to go shutdown. I don't like seeing it like that at all. It makes me a little sad, but we've comeback from it before and will be fine, again."
