Sea Of Darkness and Fiberglass & Megapixels play in double feature
A 'Surf Double Feature Friday' will be held on June 11th at the OC Tavern in San Clemente, Ca. Surfing Heritage Foundation and the Rell Sunn Bronze Memorial Project will host a fundraiser with a night of film, fun and music.
With doors opening at 7 pm guests may come and have dinner before the first film FIBERGLASS & MEGAPIXELS, which starts at 8 pm followed by SEA OF DARKNESS starting at approximately 9:30 pm. Fiberglass & Megapixels will be for all ages and at 9:30 pm, Sea of Darkness becomes a 21 and over event.
FIBERGLASS & MEGAPIXELS is directed by Derek and Craig Hoffman, who live at ground zero of The North Shore of Oahu. Swarms of photographers arrive in Hawaii every winter to focus their cameras on the best surfers in the world and working to get the right shot for the season.
The surfing industry relies on these inspiring pictures from Hawaii to sell the dynamic surf images to the masses. Starring Sonny Miller, Mick Fanning, Mike Prickett, Jordy Smith, Mark Healy, Jim Russi, Sean Davy, Larry Haynes to name a few.
SEA OF DARKNESS, directed by Michael Oblowitz who is originally from South Africa and is better known for his work in Steven Segal and Val Kilmer films, is now in post-production of the Sunny Garcia Documentary.
1970's, the Indonesian Coast, surfers attempt to balance their thirst for the perfect pipeline and discovery of the surf spot at Gland, with the dangerous risk/reward of smuggling illegal drugs and other items across the South Pacific to fund their ventures. With: Greg Noll, Jeff Chitty, Shaun Tompson, Jeff Divine, Bruce Raymond, Jeff Hackman, Bob McKnight and Martin Daly. Both of these films have won a multitude of awards at Festivals all over the world.
THE HULA GIRLS Like a ‘32 Ford tearing through the International Marketplace in 1960’s Honolulu, The Hula Girls have been busy preaching their self described ‘hulabilly’ sounds all over Southern California the last couple of years. It’s the upright bass thumping of Mr. Christian Kessler, the stand up drumming of Mr. Dominic Tucci, the Gretsch guitar twangin’ of Mr. Spike Marble, and the smooth and haunting steel guitar from Mr. Kevin Bullat!
It’s up-tempo hapa haole, tiki, and surf themed music, all filtered through the late ‘50’s and early 60’s rockabilly and rock n’ roll sound. Just when you thought tiki music had to be sleepy instrumental tunes, here come The Hula Girls! Their debut album, THE CURSE OF THE TIKI, will be out, this spring 2010.
The “Surf Double Feature Friday”, will be held at the OC Tavern, located at 2369 El Camino Real, San Clemente on Friday, June 11th . Tickets are only $10 and the doors open at 7 pm. FIBERGLASS & MEGAPIXELS starts at 8 pm and SEA OF DARKNESS at 9:30 pm, with The Hula Girls taking the stage at 11 pm. Proceeds will support the Rell Sunn Bronze Memorial Project and the Surfing Heritage Foundation.
Rell Sunn Bronze Memorial Project - Former Hawaiian Lifeguard and one of the first woman Pro Surfers, Rell Sunn was the symbol of the Queen of Makaha and Heart of The Sea. Her children’s Menehune Surf Contest was the starting point for many of the top Hawaiian surfers of today and this contest is now in its 35th year.
Rell was a well-known water woman and pro surfer, her grace, talent and spirit of Hawaii made her the ambassador of Aloha to all she met. Sadly Auntie Rell passed away from breast cancer at the young age of 47, but her legacy lives on with plans for The Rell Sunn Bronze Memorial to be placed in Hawaii.
Founded in 2001, the Surfing Heritage Foundation is a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving, presenting, and promoting surfing’s heritage for the appreciation and education of current and future generations. Creating a world-class museum/resource facility, research library, traveling exhibits, and website content, the Foundation is recognized as a definitive source of historical information and archive of material objects associated with the sport, history and culture of surfing.
Thank you to the OC Tavern, Smartwater Hydration, Island Images, Hawaii Surf House, Hula Girls, Michael Oblowitz and Derek and Ciarg Hoffman. There will be an Opportunity Drawing and other give a-ways during the evening. You may purchase tickets at the door, however, space is limited - you may want to pre-purchase tickets online at rellsunn.com or call Surfing Heritage at 949-388-0313 ext: 0
