Women's Hawaiian season will now end at Sunset Beach

The ASP recently announced that the long-heralded Women's World Tour event, the Billabong Pro Maui in Honolua, has found itself axed from the 2010 season. According to the ASP, the event was cut from the women's schedule because they couldn't secure a sponsor.

In addition to being the final event of the women's tour, Honolua also served as the final stop in the Vans Triple Crown. With the loss of Honolua, the women's Triple Crown (now a double crown if you include Haleiwa) will end with the Gidget Pro at Sunset Beach. When the announcement was made that the Billabong Pro Maui had been canceled, the women on tour were reportedly unnerved.

"I was pretty bummed when I heard that Honolua was going to be cancelled. Honolua was the best venue on the girls tour and to lose it was a pretty big dissapointment. I think we all looked forward to ending the year there as well as the triple crown," said Carissa Moore.

"It was a wave that gave the girls a chance to perform and surf put of their comfort zone. Last year it was pretty big and barreling. The girls charged and put on a good show. Waves like that is what the dream tour should be about."

On the heels of the announcement of Honolua's demise, the ASP released a statement saying that the women will be surfing alongside the men at the Billabong Pro Brazil.

"It is with great regret that ASP International announces the cancellation of the Billabong Pro Maui event from this year's ASP Women's World Tour. We are still actively pursuing a replacement sponsor for 2010, however, at present, we have not acquired one. While the girls won't be surfing Honolua Bay this season, Billabong will be reinstating them to Brazil to compete alongside the men in 2011."
