Blows to the Head: How Boxing Changed My Mind (Suny Press, January 2010) is the provocative story of an unlikely contender and her midlife transformation through boxing -- me!
I'm a psychotherapist in private practice in New Haven, CT. I'm a Lecturer in the Department of Psychiatry at Yale University, where I supervise mental health trainees. I also host a popular music and interview show at WPKN-FM.
Never athletic as a child (I barely broke a sweat growing up in Newark in the 1950s), my "day job" has been quite sedentary. In my mid-fifties I took up boxing and fell in love. Boxing, sparring, attending fights, writing articles about fights, and ultimately my memoir, have been transformational events that I never could have imagined. The boxing community has been warm and welcoming. I created a new feature on my WPKN show, "In Your Corner." Along with my co-host and coach John Spehar of Fighting Fitness in Orange, CT, we interview authors and athletes.
I hope to keep you posted here on the journey of an new author, and someone who has finally realized what sports have to offer! It's never too late.
