The final four quarterfinalists were determined today. A few very deserved teams were also forced to make a quick journey back home.

Group C: Japan 3, England 1

Both England and Japan knew that not even a clear victory would assure their spots in the quarterfinals. And the result ended up mattering naught as both teams return home, despite some spirited performances. In the 20′ minute, Japan took the lead and felt confident they would advance to the next round as Nigeria was up 1-0 against Mecixo in the other match. Japan soon went 2-0 and then 3-0 up as Natsuki Kishikawa scored two goals in just four minutes. England were not creating and could only offer long balls. Toni Duggan scored a consolation penalty in the 83′ but it was far too late by then. The Japanese players’ hearts were broken, however, as they learned that Mexico had equalized, thus eliminating them from the tournament.

Group C: Mexico 1, Nigeria 1

Mexico’s hopes of advancing were threadbare as the team went down early to an Ebere Orji header in the 16′. The rest of the match would be an open affair as Mexico had everything to play for. Orji, Nigeria’s best player, was replaced at half time and the opened up an opportunity for Mexico. They seized it in the 77′ as Alina Garciamendez chested down a ball and rocketed it into the net for the equalizer.

Group D action after the jump.

Group D: USA 1, South Korea 0

Game recap below.

Group D: Ghana 2, Switzerland 0

The USA/South Korea match saw the end of Ghana’s run in the tournament, despite a lively performance from the Ghanians. They pressed hard for an early goal and it finally came after captain Elizabeth Addo volleyed in a free kick in the 31′. They were at it again just 11 minutes later as Elizabeth Budjoe slotted home Ghana’s second goal. The two goal-performance was in vain, however. Switzerland, on the other hand, return home having zero wins, 11 goals conceded and zero goals scored.
