Who are they: Now come the heavy-hitters and no one’s bigger than Bayern Munich in the world of German football. But much like other women’s teams, the women’s section has roots in the 1970s and it was very successful back in the day. The club first earned promotion into the Frauenbundesliga in the 2000-01 season and has never looked back since. They frequently (as in six out of 10 times) finish 4th. Their best year by far the 2008-09 season when in which they were actually tied with Turbine Potsdam in 1st but lost out on goal difference. Since the 2007 Women’s World Cup, the men’s team has poured more money and support into the women’s.

Men’s affiliation: Like you don’t know. FC Bayern Munich are the most successful club team in German football. In the 1970′s it was led by Der Kaiser Franz Beckenbauer and won the European Cup three times in a row. The team recently appeared in the 2010 UEFA Champions League Final losing 2-0 to Inter Milan.

Where they finished last year: 4th in the Frauenbundesliga

Notable names: Bayern Munich star Melanie Behringer was injured last year and has transferred to Frankfurt but there are many other names. Petra Wimbersky began her career with Bayern Munich and will be returning to the team after an eight-year break. Defender Steffi Mirlach is one of the 2010 U-20 WWC winners. And then there’s 30 year-old Austrian goal machine Nina Ainger. Ainger has been with the club since 2001 and has scored 99 goals in just 147 appearances.

What to expect: 4th. What else?
