A Familiar Sight In 2010 - BYU's Jennie Marshall Celebrating A Goal

BYU 2 (Marshall 17′, Payne 55′) – 1 (Baumann 29′) Northwestern

In a close affair at Provo’s South Field, BYU continued their strong start to the season with victory over a battling Northwestern side. Cougars star forward Carlee Payne would net her second of the season, and the night’s eventual match winner in the fifty-fifth minute. Payne did her best to hold off two Northwestern defenders after a great pass by Kassidy Shumway before guiding a shot to the far post to hit the back of the net. Jennie Marshall had opened the scoring in the seventeenth minute by fighting through a tackle before ripping a shot past Northwestern goalkeeper Carolyn Edwards at the near post, also after an assist by Shumway. The lead would only last a little over ten minutes as Jennifer Baumann was on hand to drill a thumping header from Jill Dunn’s cross past Cougars keeper McKinzie Olson. Northwestern would have a few chances to force extra time, including on a Sam Greene effort after a corner in the final ten minutes, but BYU keeper Olson and a battling defense did just enough to ensure the Cougars stayed undefeated on the year.

Other Matches:

-Minnesota pounded Belmont, 7-0 in Nashville. Allie Phillips and Shari Eckstrom both had a brace, while Katie Bethke rounded up a hat trick of assists. Katie Shelander also had a goal and an assist from off the bench.

-Kerriann Welch struck twice within the first ten minutes for Central Connecticut State, but Holy Cross had equalized ten minutes later. CCSU would laugh last though with Beth Lloyd powering home a header off a free kick to fuel the 3-2 win.

-Lauren Trizna of Longwood walked away with the match ball, scoring a hat trick for the Lancers in a 4-0 win over VMI. Oddly enough, all three goals came from the penalty spot.

-Brittney Steinbruch became Miami (FL)’s all time leading scorer with her fifty-ninth minute goal against Florida Gulf Coast on Tuesday night. Steinbruch would add Miami’s third later as the Canes swept to a 3-1 win.
