Villanova Forward Heidi Sabatura Will Be On The Prowl As Wildcats Look For An Upset Against Georgetown

OK, stop me if you’ve heard this one before. Georgetown soccer erupts to great start, beating nobody of note. Hopes are high before an inevitable crash when tougher tests come to town. The Hoyas have functioned much as the weather has in the past few years: Hot at the beginning of the season but desperately cold when results have mattered most. The Hoyas stormed out of the gate in 2009, winning seven of their first eight, making it seem like they would surely be in the field of sixty-four at the end of the season. Things looked brighter when they beat West Virginia in Big East play near the end of the campaign. But then they lost their final three matches, including a bad loss to DePaul and a bubble busting defeat against St. John’s.

Now, hopes are again high for the Hoyas. The team has scored seventeen and conceded none in their first three matches. Georgetown midfielder Ingrid Wells might be one of the best players you’ve never heard of in the college game. But the old bugaboo of creampuff scheduling has reared its head. The Hoyas’ first three foes have a combined record of 2-8-0 thus far. Still, Georgetown finds itself in the Top 25 of the Coaches’ poll, some would say somewhat generously.

There won’t be any generosity to the Hoyas’ ranking if they pass their first major test of the season against a motivated Villanova squad in Philadelphia. The home side surely remember their 4-0 beating at the hands of Georgetown last season and will be eager to turn the tables on their Big East rivals in an absurdly early but critical conference showdown. Nova will also be wanting to erase a Sunday loss to James Madison from their minds as soon as possible. The Wildcats boast one of the conference’s best scoring duos in Heidi Sabatura and Katie Ryan, threatening to turn this matchup into one capable of fireworks at both ends of the pitch.

Most conference play doesn’t start until a few weeks yet, but the Big East has already served up a delicious early season treat for us on late Wednesday afternoon between two sides with much to prove.
