A Familiar Sight on Wednesday - Ashley Bares Being Stopped By Leslie Deebach
Marquette 1 (Miller 21′) – 1 (Thompson 71′) Wisconsin-Milwaukee
In what has become a familiar pattern for the 2010 Marquette Golden Eagles, the home side once again dominated the statistical sheet against a mid-major but were ultimately unable to win the match thanks to a strong goalkeeping effort on the other side. Marquette looked to be cruising to victory after Ally Miller had powered home Lauren Thut’s header in the twenty-first minute. Leslie Deebach’s five saves in the first half kept the visitors in the match until the seventy-first minute when the Panthers would equalize. Nicole Sperl’s long free kick was flicked on by Sarah Hagen, letting Keara Thompson beat Marquette keeper Natalie Kulla to the ball and putting the teams back on level terms with less than twenty minutes left to play. Deebach’s nine saves in regulation had given Milwaukee a chance to grab a winner in extra time, and Hagen would nearly do so in the second extra frame. The Panthers’ talisman would send a long header from a Makenzie Gillaspie pass sailing over Marquette keeper Natalie Kulla who was just able to race back and get a head to the ball, knocking it off the bar and saving the match for the home side. For the match, the Golden Eagles enjoyed a 12-2 advantage in shots on goal and 9-3 edge in corner kicks. Fouls were dead even and plentiful, as could be expected in a cross-town rivalry, with each side racking up twenty-two apiece through the one hundred ten minutes.
