Taylor Vancil Was Outstanding In Goal For Louisville Against Kentucky

Louisville 2 (Rehder 69′, Uremovich 89′) – 0 Kentucky

Louisville defended their turf in a 2-0 win over Kentucky in a pulsating state derby on Thursday evening in front of a school record 2,643 fans. Caitlin Rehder would finally break Kentucky’s resistance after sixty-eight minutes, pouncing on a loose ball in the area to beat UK keeper Sydney Hiance. Angelika Uremovich would put the cherry on top of the derby win in the eighty-ninth minute, putting home the rebound from her first shot that Hiance had saved. Taylor Vancil was immense in goal for the Cardinals, making seven saves to keep the clean sheet. Included was a stunning triple save when Vancil denied Jenna Goblirsch, Caitlin Landis, and ex-Cardinal Kelsey Hunyadi within a handful of seconds. The Wildcats also spurned a big chance earlier when Natalie Horner had ballooned a shot after beating Vancil to a ball. Kentucky coach Jon Lipsitz was left to bemoan his team’s increasingly direct tactics after the half, as his team “tried to win the game on one pass over and over “. Sydney Hiance made ten saves for Kentucky in a losing effort. The win pushes Louisville’s record on the season to 5-0, their best start in program history.

BYU 0 – 0 LSU

In front of 3,117 fans, BYU stuttered to a scoreless draw in Provo against a battling LSU side who snapped a three match losing skid. The Tigers were able to hold BYU’s volatile offense scoreless, essentially erasing the Cougars’ red hot forward Jennie Marshall from the match, holding the striker to just one off-target shot on the evening. For their part, BYU did a good job in continuing LSU’s offensive woes, holding the Tigers to just three shots on goal over the scoreless one hundred ten minutes and not allowing a shot in the extra sessions. BYU keeper McKinzie Olson was not forced into a save after the first half but did make a pair of stops on LSU’s Carlie Banks that kept the match scoreless. Olson’s counterpart in the LSU goal, Mo Isom, made a pair of saves to keep the match on level terms, including a critical stop in the waning moments of the second half of extra time, saving a header from Carlee Payne to ensure LSU would leave Provo with a draw.

UConn 2 (Busque 15′, Clark 79′) – 0 Yale

UConn continued their winning ways with a 2-0 win over upset minded Yale in Storrs on Thursday night. The Huskies would grab the winning goal with under a quarter of an hour on the clock when Melissa Busque beat keeper Adel Jackson-Gibson, who had come charging off her line, to head in a chipped pass from Becky Gundling after the Bulldogs had failed to convincingly clear a corner. The Huskies would huff and puff but fail to salt the game away until the seventy-ninth minute when Erin Clark would grab her first goal of the season with a magnificent individual effort, beating three players as she drove hard to the right side of the area before calmly finishing to the far post, just past the outstretched fingertips of Jackson-Gibson. Yale’s Becky Brown, so critical for the visitors, was still an influence with three shots on goal, but UConn keeper Jessica Dulski was up to the task, stopping Brown and the other Yale players for the entirety of the night to record the shutout in goal. Jackson-Gibson was to thank for keeping the scoreline at a not-so-lopsided 2-0, after making a handful of brilliant stops for the visitors. The Huskies enjoyed a 19-7 advantage in shots, but shots on goal was much more even at 8-5 in favor of the victors. Much to the relief of the home side, this match would not go to extra time, marking the first time the Huskies had finished in regulation this season.
